It’s that in between time – between the Autumn Equinox and Samhain, and Autumn is trying to kick off here in Sydney, but we keep getting hit with warm, hot days, but thankfully the nights are starting to cool down. Autumn, are you there? Or are you struggling to load your program? Please hurry up!
On Sunday 6th April, we held our last Death Cafe that we have planned (for now, watch this space) and I wanted to share a little about the experience of hosting a couple of these and what I’ve learned as a host.
I went into this entire experience hoping to create a safe and confidental space to discuss death, dying and grief from a pagan, witchy and occult perspective and I (along with my generous co-host who I recruited along the way) absolutely achieved that. But what I didn’t expect was the heart-warming support of folks in my community and those who I’d never met before wholly embracing the idea and really engaging with it in such a raw and honest way. It was more successful on that level than I ever imagined it could be. I’ve also noticed feedback online asking for online versions of this, which I’m happy to run (stay tuned for info on that), and folks even asking for it to come interstate! Sure, if you want to sponsor the travel budget, I’d be happy to come to you! (this is a tongue in cheek response, but hey, if you’re serious, hit me up). Facilitating these discussions with my dear friend who, between the two of us, side by side over the last handful of years, we have both supported each other through some of the toughest losses we’ve had to endure. I am grateful for your support my friend. Thank you!
What this overall interest in the Death Cafe tells me is that my gut was right – this is a space that is sorely needed in the wider community, and in our witchcraft communities too because we do have some more unique and differing beliefs around death, the spirit and dying in general. How can we incorporate those beliefs into our end of days practises? How do we let those ideas help us hold our grief? These are some of the things we’ll explore with our Samhain rite.
Our next event on this theme will be Samhain, if you’re interested in joining us for that in person, all the information for that can be found here
Thank you to everyone who has supported this endeavour so far. My heart is full and richer for the interaction and space that we’ve shared.
And a heartfelt thank you to Guardian Funeral Homes at Blacktown for kindly supporting and hosting us.
