Right now, I’m focusing on deepening my understanding of what’s possible in my witchy ‘home field’, particularly at its edges—the liminal spaces where what becomes the familiar meets the unknown. This idea isn’t mine; I first encountered the idea of the ‘home field’ through Dr. Hannah Sanders, who writes about it on her website here. And maybe it’s not unique to Hannah either, but I like what it has reminded me to do. I’ve been practicing something similar for a long time, although I hadn’t fully articulated it until I saw how she described it. She emphasises observing the seasons within her own home field and how the energy interacts within her home field which really clarified the concept for me.
It also reminded me of how our worlds contracted during lockdown, when we had no choice but to engage with our immediate surroundings. During a recent trip to the UK, I realised how much early modern witchcraft was likely practiced entirely within the home field. Many of our ancestors lived, worked, and stayed within a very small radius—often just a village or two—for generations. Moving even 5 or 10 kilometres away would have been nearly unimaginable.
I encourage you to try narrowing your focus to your own home field in relation to your witchcraft. Go out, observe, and really understand what’s happening in your immediate environment. It’s a concept that invites us to reconnect with the spaces closest to us. And then, when you’re used to that, start to understand what the edges of your home field feel like and what they feel like when the energy of that field has been disturbed. You might also have more than one ‘home field’ if you spend a significant amount of time living in one place and working in another. I’m curious to hear how this translates for you and your ‘home fields’ of work.
Google ‘2kms from home’ for a helpful tool to see your local ‘home field’. It was a tool developed at the height of covid so people could check how far they were ‘allowed’ to travel from home. You can now apply tech like this in your Craft 😉
